Earning an MBA is a feather to one’s cap, especially since getting into a business school is very competitive.  Whether you are eyeing an Ivy League or any reputable university with a top-notch MBA program, you need to have more than stellar grades and outstanding recommendations.  As the best business schools get the most MBA applicants, the challenge for you is to stand out above the rest.  Whether or not an interview is part of the selection process, your best chance at getting accepted lies on your personal statement, or admission essay.

Preparing an MBA essay that the Admission Board will remember

Business schools place a high premium on innovativeness.  For this reason, your MBA application essay should capture the attention of the Admission Board and be able to hold it long enough to let them get to know you as a person.  Usually, admission essays are two to three pages long, but some business schools set a limit to the page and word count.  In addition, they may give you a specific question to answer, although some allow the applicants to choose their own themes.  Make sure that you stick to the guidelines and prescribed format of the business school that you are applying at.  While one of your essay objectives is to give you instant recall with the Board, you sure would not want them to remember you as the rule-breaker.

Reading several MBA essay samples

Although there are no clear-cut rules to writing an admission essay, there are certain things that the Admission Board expects their business school applicants to include in their essays.  Browse through MBA essay samples of successful applicants to get a feel of what the Admission Board prefers in terms of essay structure and composition.  You will find these in the university website or business school application websites.  As you read, make a checklist of the important elements that should never go missing when you write your own admission essay: personal goals and insights, influences, relevant accomplishments, and a plan of action.  From the samples, identify which qualities are valued by the business school.  Your essay should present you as an individual who is a good fit to the program, so it would be unwise to substitute the contents of another person’s admission essay.

Keeping your essay concise and tight

You should be clear with your personal goals, and keep your discussion focused on experiences which are consistent with your purpose.  To keep from rambling on and on, set aside a time for brainstorming before preparing an outline.  Make a list of the things that motivated you to pursue an MBA.  If the business school did not prescribe a format for your essay, choose a topic that you are most interested in and use it as a framework.  For instance, if you are into backpacking, then launch into your essay describing how you see the pursuit of an MBA as a new adventure.  Arrange the items which resulted from your brainstorming activity according to your framework and write off the things that do not fit in.  Stick to your outline and know when to end your essay.

A typical two-year MBA course, the first and the second year of which is separated by the summer internship, orients the students to the field of MBA management in a holistic manner. The first year is more generic in nature where the students get an idea of all that they must know regarding various management functions. All introductory MBA course are taught in the first and second tri-semesters during the first year. Later in the first year, they are also introduced to the specialized areas.

In the second year, the students have to choose from a variety of specialization choices. There are five main specializations that are offered by almost all MBA school. They are Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Development, Operations Management and Information Technology.

Which Specializations?
Dr. SP Parashar, former director of IIM Indore says, “An MBA course do not provide many choices during the first year. Students generally learn core subjects in the first year in all MBA courses. But at the end of the first year, the choice of specialization should become pretty clear in an MBA course.”

IMT Ghaziabad Director, Late Dr. Anwar Ali said that the second year of elective papers and specialization are designed to give the students an in depth knowledge about a particular field as well as the industry. “The second year of an MBA course provides them with a lot of exposure to the practical field also, as they have to do a lot of project work and case studies.”

Talking about the area of specialization, Dr. BS Sahay, Director of MDI said, “In the second year, the students take an elective or optional MBA course to specialize in a maximum of two functional areas. These areas are: Finance, Information Management, Marketing, Strategy and Operations Management. To specialize in an area, a student must take a minimum of five elective course credits offered in that area.”

Making a choice for an MBA course
Dr. Pingali Venugopal, Dean, XLRI Jamshedpur gave broad criteria on choosing the specialization of MBA course. He mentioned, “You have to choose your career very carefully. You should select the right path on the basis of your interest and instincts and not on the basis of peer pressure or high salary.

Students who have mechanical ability, who prefer to work with objects, machinery and tools should choose Production and Operations. Students who love to observe, learn, investigate, analyze, evaluate or solve problems, interact with people and have a good communication skill should go for Marketing.

Students who have artistic, innovating or institutional abilities and like to work in unstructured environment using their imagination and creativity should work for the Strategy sector.

Students who like to work with people to enlighten, inform, help, train, or are skilled with words should join HR and those students, who like to work with data, have numerical ability, carry out tasks in detail or follow through on others’ instructions should go for Finance.”

Specialized MBA school offer some specialized options too. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) provides specialized MBA in International Business. The MBA program is also called MBA (IB). While recommending international oriented programs, KT Chako, Director of IIFT said, “Indian businesses are now going global in a big way. Indian companies are now fully participating in the globalization process. Today’s business executives need to be equipped with understanding of international business and trade.”

IIM Ahmedabad has launched an elective MBA course for its PGPM second year students. The name of the course is ‘Contemporary Film Industry (CFI) – A Business Perspective’. The course aims at giving a general background of the film and entertainment industry in India and abroad. It will introduce the MBA students to various kinds of film and entertainment businesses like feature films, ad films, documentary filmmaking, animation films and a glimpse of the global film industry.

MBA experts recommend that passion and interest should be the key, rather than external reasons like market condition and job prospects. “Choice of specialization in MBA course is a function of your aptitude and what you want to do in future. Don’t let short-term market forces drive or alter your specialization choice. Having a long-range perspective about one’s career helps students make the right choices. Marketing opportunities are more and in service sector, the experience will offer potential for cross sector mobility as well,” Dr Venkataratnam, Director, IMI said.

While doing an MBA course, the specializations should be chosen on the basis of your passion, choice and capability. The first year is the time when you will have the hunch regarding choosing your specialization subject? An MBA school can only introduce you towards the various domains of an MBA program. But you have to be your own judge to take decisions regarding specializations.

Now that the CAT 2010 season is on, you must have immersed yourselves in the preparation. But apart from preparation, you face certain questions which affect your preparation and your admission to IIMs or top B-schools depend on these factors. This article of MBAUniverse.com will answer those issues.

IIMs select only genius
Many of you think that IIMs is the place where only geniuses and students with extra ordinary intellect study. But though this is partly correct, but most of the lot is formed by hard working students who have really believe in themselves and performed well.  If you are an average student, there is no need to think that you will not be able to make it to the IIMs. “To ensure that your candidature is good, you must showcase an all round personality. Nothing is lost. You can start from today. In case you are working, do exceedingly well in your work place. If you are still a student, focus on your academics,” says Gejo Sreenivasan, Principal Consultant, Career Launcher.

Year gap in education
You might have a gap in your education for a year or two. The question, which might be bothering you is, how it will affect your selection in IIMs or a top B-School. But experts say it will not be an issue if the reason is justifiable. Along with that, you should really make your base strong. For example, if you are a working professional, make your profile strong. “Do well in your job, and simultaneously prepare for the admission process of various top B-schools,” says Vinayak Kudva, Product Head, IMS Learning. Having an extra curricular activity added in your profile will also help you in this case. “Ensure that you pick up a good extracurricular activity and invest your time in that,” mentions Sreenivasan.

Choosing between job and MBA
While you had planned to do MBA after your graduation, but a job offer after graduation is making you think again! If you are confused whether to take up the job or prepare for CAT and other MBA entrance exams, experts offer you solution. According to Vinayak Kudva, having work experience always helps during the admission in the top B-schools. “Take up a job and prepare for CAT along side. Make sure you get through one of the top 30 B-schools or there will be not much value of your MBA. In case you are not able to do so, prepare and retake CAT while continuing with your job,” Kudva suggests.

Being a fresher affects admission
While it is a well known fact that B-schools prefer students with work experience, but that does not mean freshers don’t stand a chance in the admission. If you have confidence in yourself, score well in CAT or other MBA entrance exam and perform well in your GD & PI, your admission in a top B-School will not be affected because of your lack of work experience. “At the moment, you should concentrate on your CAT and other MBA entrance exam preparation. If you are able to prove your mettle, your admission will not be affected for being a fresher,” mentions R Shiva Kumar, Director (R & D), Career Launcher. “Being a fresher is not a hindrance. B-Schools take freshers as well as working professionals,” adds Kudva.

Graduation from Distance Learning affecting MBA admission
Experts mention that through some institutes do not accept education through correspondence, but it is not the case for most of the B-schools. “, It is a fact that some institutes do not recognize correspondence courses while admitting students into the MBA programs. At the same time there are many who do not bring in this restriction,” says Sidharth Balakrishna, CAT expert, author and an IIM Calcutta alumnus. If you have pursued your education from a well known institute like IGNOU, SMU-DE or Symbiosis, it will be surely recognized by top B-schools.

Taking loans for MBA due to financial constraints
With increasing fee in the B-schools, taking loans is becoming inevitable for the students. But there is not much to worry regarding this. “Most Public Sector Banks like the State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, Dena Bank etc. offer education loans. Loan repayment starts only after you have completed your MBA. Generally there are no collaterals required to the extent of approx Rs.4 lakhs. However, this varies from bank to bank. Many reputed B-Schools have collaborations with banks in order to provide loans to students. Herein the institute acts as a guarantor instead of the parent/guardian/collateral. Further, several schools also offer full/partial scholarships to needy/worthy students. One needs to take in consideration factors such as EMI amount, rate of interest and repayment before applying for an Education Loan,” states Kudva.
